I've read two or three biographies of Martin Luther and wanted to read another. He was a truly remarkable man. Brilliant, courageous beyond words. This book by the German Julius Kostin is very well written and - for a translation - flows very nicely. Very well formatted for the Kindle.Kostlin goes much farther into the politics of the day and presents you with a large cast of characters: both allies and enemies of Luther. Some of the other books I've read tend to present Luther as fighting a lone fight against the church. Like anything in real life, it was far more complicated. There were already many nobles and academics who were unhappy with the church: the selling of indulgences; the graft, greed, immorality, corruption and self indulgent lifestyles of the priesthood; the basic tenets of the Catholic church; the constant siphoning off of German money to Rome; Catholic power and the political meddling of the Pope in general.
It does a good job of explaining that the more Luther read and studied the Bible, the more problems he had with the things the Catholic church was teaching. It documents how his acceptance of salvation by faith and faith alone required him to break with the church. This lead then to his publically questioning more Catholic doctrines: priesthood as a separate class, not allowing non-priests to read the bible, celibacy of the priesthood, purgatory, and many more. Like most of his generation, at first he did not seek to destroy the church, but rather to reform it. It was only later that he gave up and made a final break.
Hard to imagine back then that the Catholic church so completely permeated daily life and that a priest would have the courage to risk ex-communication and death by challenging its power. Twice, he came close to being burned at the stake for heresy. We all have much to thank him for.

Luther was a remarkable person. This is an excellent biography of him. It is thorough and readable. As I read this edition of the book, the one with the introduction by Sloan, I was glad that, unlike other older books, it appears to have been nicely edited by the publisher, and it looks good, too.

I don't think there is a better book written about Martin Luther. This book will remain in my library and be utilized as a reference source by me, but my family as well.
Well researched and nicely written. Wasn't committed to reading it but after starting it didn't take long at all to be pulled in. It always delights me what one can learn about the times surrounding an individual in a biography. This is as it should be and the author delivers.
This is an extremely thorough treatment of the life of Luther. It covers not only his life, but key relationships in his life, and their effect on Luther.
There is also a lot of historical detail in this book.
It is clear that the author is a supporter of Luther from the writings. This however doesn't take away from the detail in the book and the life that Luther lived. On the opposite side, it would be hard to imagine someone who was against Luther and the reformation taking the time to detail this much information.
This is not a light read - the book was written in the late 1800's, in German, then translated. The language and prose do take a while to get used to. At one point I put the book down for a while and read some fiction, and it was difficult to adjust my mind again to the older language that this book contains.
Negatives aside, this is a good historical resource of Luthers life, and gives not just a view of Luther, but of the time that he lived in, and the people and influences around him that, in a way, were part of his taking the path in life he did. It provided more of an understanding of how he got to where he did - rather than just examining the effects of Luther and the Reformation, it helps set the stage for the conflicts that occurred, why they occurred, and how we got to where we are today.
