Iwo; Assault on Hell is the fourth book in the Marine paratrooper series. The Marine Paras from the first three books - Mission Raise Hell, Battalion of the Damned, and the un-released third book - are disbanded from their units and used to form the combat nucleus of the newly formed 5th Marine Division. On February 19th, 1945, they land on Iwo Jima, the first US forces to fight on Japanese soil. Thirty-six days later, a composite battalion is all that remains to claim the island.

Iwo; Assault on Hell paints a blood mosaic that shows a worms eye view of what is arguably the most violent and bloody battle in WWII.

Iwo; Assault on Hell Marine Paratroopers Book 4 eBook James Christ

I have read virtually event book, after-action report, etc. about the Pacific War. To date, I held Eugene B. Sledge's wonderful book With the Old Breed at Pelilu and Okinawa as the finest account told by a Marine infantryman or any other rifleman. In my considered opinion, that book is the best. With that in mind, I read Iwo: Assault on Hell in a day or so. It is a given that that battle was, to that date, the worst fought by three divisions of Marines (Okinawa had yet to be invaded).

I served as an infantry officer in the Republic of Vietnam in 1967-68. In my heart of hearts I am convinced I could not have done what these young men accomplished against overwhelming difficult terrain and fanatical defenders. God bless 'em!

I recall viewing with shock a picture in Dr. Sledge's book, The Old Breed, showing the survivors of his original company after the battle of Pelilu showing 14 men of the original 300 plus officers and men fit for duty. The last part of this book tells that of one company that was there to the last day, 2 original Marine paratroopers of the original 300 man company that landed on D-Day were alive but you couldn't call the exhausted Marines fit for duty, but they were there doing their job. The only time in U.S. Marine Corps history where Marine casualties exceeded those of the enemy.

It is an intimate tale taken from exhaustive interviews, letters, etc. The tales are so well woven together the reader is not troubled by a disjointed narrative or sometimes-awkward read of other WWII books taken from survivor accounts about a battle. This book flows like well written fiction. One almost gets the sense that he is at the scene, like the last man on a patrol; but here, in the safety of my armchair. In that sense, the book's delivery is much more intimate than can be expressed. The book, at least to that extent surpasses Dr. Sledge's great book. This is not a better book than With the Old Breed but it be positioned next to it on the "Best WWII Books Shelf.

Iwo; Assault on Hell Marine Paratroopers Book 4 eBook James Christ Reviews

This book touched me in ways that no other on this topic did -- and I have read other great ones. I was four years old when these brave men did more than their duty in that hell. Although I am an atheist (but I recognize that virtually all the men were believers), I got a lump in my throat and watery eyes reading the chaplain's prayer after the battle was over. And I nearly became physically ill when I read what happened to the family-man replacement who was told to sit still by a veteran but went to make himself some hot chocolate.

Even the photographs were good, which is unusual for my oldest edition . And I gazed on all them in reverence. Do they make Americans, Marines, or even men like that any more? I doubt it.

One nit On my , the footnotes weren't linked to their end-of-book locations. That is 's fault, not the author's or editor's. I will look for other books by James Christ. Anyhow, I read the footnotes after all the test and they made sense, first because the book was so well-written that I easily recalled the men they were about, and because many were of the "what became of them?" or "where are they now?" variety.

An incredible account of the horror and blood bath that was Iwo Jima. As a long time reader of war history and historical fiction, I have never before had to pause so many times due to sadness.
There are so many instances when you think it can't get any worse, yet it does...Much worse.
The "beauty" of Christ's writing is that it is shockingly sad but never is the violence described in a flamboyant or in a manner meant to glorify the carnage.
I have never read a more descriptive, true account of a battle . I honestly felt the pain and misery those brave and extraordinary men faced.
Lacked with small, short incidental meetings inexperienced helped to keep the reader in the reality of what otherwise would have been an unbelievable story.
Lots of names and places with numerous similar experiences, the small and unique nuances that laced each description of horror made any redundant non existent.
Christ was also masterful at following and lacing together individuals stories from D-Day 1 through the fierce fighting to the end. An excellent job of describing how many of the men involved from start to finish thought and felt.

A magnificent job of writing
